Sticking to Our Values: The Challenging Journey of Running a Small Family Business

Writer: organicdogusorganicdogus

Running a small family business like Organic Dog has been a labor of love—equal parts passion, determination, and sleepless nights. It’s more than just a business to us. It’s personal. It’s deeply personal.

But I won’t lie—it’s also a constant tug-of-war between sticking to our values and chasing higher profits.

It would be so easy to cut corners. Trust me, the temptation is always there. I could opt for cheaper ingredients—those packed with fillers, artificial preservatives, and who-knows-what. It would be a quick way to boost profits. But when I picture our dogs—Lola, Olive, and Casper—feeding them something I wouldn’t feel good about giving them, or serving it to our customer pups, it stops me in my tracks. I just can’t do it.

The truth is, good nutrition is the foundation of good health. It’s heartbreaking to see so many dogs developing serious illnesses like cancer, kidney disease, or diabetes—conditions that are often linked to poor diets. That’s why we’re committed to using only non-GMO, natural, and organic dog food ingredients. It’s also why we test and double-check every batch before our handmade dog treats and freeze-dried dog food toppers ever reach another dog's bowl.

But doing things the right way isn’t cheap. Big corporations can buy ingredients by the pallet, hire expensive influencers, run endless ads, and offer massive discounts and free shipping every day. We really get it—everyone loves a good deal, and we understand the need to save. We know that might be frustrating for some, but that is how we keep offering the healthy dog snacks we believe in.

We also know that trust takes time to build. Honestly, gaining new customers is one of the hardest and slowest parts of running a small business. And understandably so—people don’t know us yet. We’re not a household name, and trust isn’t given; it’s earned. Unlike the big brands that can dominate search results and flood social media with ads, we rely on something much more personal—word-of-mouth, referrals, social media shares, and genuine connections. It’s a slower process, but one we believe in because it’s built on real relationships and honest experiences.

But what we can do is work hard every day to prove ourselves through the quality of our products, our customer care, and our commitment to doing things the right way. We hope that as you get to know us, you’ll see we’re a small business you can trust.

And while we may not be able to match the big guys on discounts or free shipping, we can do something they can’t—tailor our products to meet specific needs. If your pup has a special dietary request or if there’s something we can adjust for you, don’t hesitate to reach out. I do my best to respond to messages as quickly as I can, and if there’s a way I can make it happen, I’ll be more than happy to help.

We’re also working on improving our packaging. Not just for practicality, but to make it more eye-catching and unique. We want packaging that stands out, grabs your attention, and truly reflects the quality of what’s inside. It’s important to us that our products look just as good as they taste!

We’re a work in progress. We’re learning as we grow. Our dream is to build a community of dog lovers who believe in better—better food, better ingredients, and better lives for our pups. We can’t do it without your support. When you share a post, tell a friend about us, or leave a review, you’re helping us grow, one step at a time. Choosing to try our products means the world to us—it’s what keeps our small business running and allows us to continue doing what we love. Every purchase, recommendation, and kind word helps us stay true to our mission of providing high-quality, wholesome treats for every pup we serve.

And every now and then, we receive a heartwarming message from a happy customer (thank you!), telling us how much their pup loves our treats and how they appreciate our stellar customer service. Those moments? They keep me going. They remind me why we do this and why the late nights and hard work are worth it.

Thank you for being here, for caring, and for helping us stay true to our mission. We’re excited to continue this journey with you.

Monica, our fur kids enjoy your products. When one of our dogs was failing, she wouldn't eat her food, till we used your food toppers. We credit your toppers, hearts, and puffs with giving us more quality time with our girl. Something we will never forget. Hugs.
